Community Quilts

Over the years, members of the Guild have designed, made and donated many quilts to charitable groups in the Brockville, Ontario area for use as fund-raisers. The recipient groups include the Alzheimer’s Society, Big Brothers Association of Leeds & Grenville, Brockville Public Library, Girl Guides, The Friendship Centre, May Court Club of Brockville, Brockville Museum, Homewood Museum, Fulford Place Museum, St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville General Hospital Auxiliary, Interval House and Habitat for Humanity.

Small articles, such as book bags for the Brockville Library, placemats for Meals on Wheels, quilted purses for the Big Sisters Association, baby quilts for the hospital and pot holders for the Lung Association, have been made and donated.

For several years the Guild made quilts for an orphanage in the Chausy area of Belarus and hundreds of quilts were made and donated to Canadian Aid for Chernobyl.

The Blue Trunk  - Block of the Month
In 2010-2011 our Community Quilts Committee began focusing on our home communities. Our blue steamer trunk holds any and all donated quilts. When an emergency arises and a quilt is needed, we're ready to help out. Look for our Blue Trunk!

In the same year we revived our Block of the Month program. Each month members make one or more of the chosen quilt block and donate the blocks to the Community Quilts Committee. The blocks are then pieced and quilted, and added to the Blue Trunk.

Harvest Sharing Food Bank
Each October we bring non-perishable food items to our monthly meeting with each contributor being eligible to participate in a draw. The collected food is donated to the Brockville Harvest Sharing Food Bank.

Christmas Stocking Raffle
At our November members’ meeting the Community Quilts Committee holds a Christmas Stocking Raffle. The stocking is filled with quilt related “goodies” and proceeds from the raffle are donated to an area charity or not for profit group in thanks for the wonderful work they do in our communities.

Quilt Gallery at the Brockville Public Library
Community Quilts decorates the walls of the Brockville Public Library with assorted quilts and wall hangings one month of each year. They warm up the atmosphere and are much appreciated.

Habitat for Humanity
We have for many years partnered with Thousand Islands Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. We donate a bed quilt in our green and their blue colours to the family moving into each new build.

Fire Department of Gananoque and the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands
This new partnership in 2012 has uson an ongoing basis, providing a quilt for each pump truck in this fire department. The quilts will be given by the fire department to families in emergency need.

Upper Canada Village
Each year we participate in the weekend fibre arts program at Upper Canada Village showing our members’ quilts and provding information on quilting techniques.
